Clint Emerson and Pat MacNamara On 'Tactical Deception'

Two things of note. First, the issue of creating space was something I originally learned from Carl Cestari.  Second, the Police Interview position is essentially identical to 'The Fence' position popularized by Geoff Thompson in the UK.  I originally saw a very good description of it in a video called "Practical Hand-To-Hand Combat for the Police Officer"  from Chris Caracci, a former member of SEAL Team 6.

All of which goes to show that while certain methods/techniques can have different names, when you come right down to it, where personal protection is involved, your best results will most likely come from a small handful of basic skills.

So Today Is Neither Wheelgun Wednesday or Workout Wednesday...But It's Still Some Practical Training Info

I've been complaining for years now that firearms, unarmed combat and fitness training are great and necessary. However there are other aspects of being prepared for bad situations. For those of you who remember, I put up a 5 part series on Emergency Trauma Care a few years ago.

Well today we have an article from Offgrid magazine about another aspect of  emergency wound care. Some parts would actually require some specific, structured training and certification to perform. However there is enough information that can be used to provide you with the ability to stabilize an injured party until Emergency Services arrive. I hope all of you can get something from the article.

How to Treat Penetrating Chest Wounds

by Joe Alton M.Dcopyright@Offgrid Magazine

When you think about lung damage, you might think about pneumonia, but not all damage to the lungs and chest is related to inflammation due to infections. Trauma is also a possibility, especially for those of us who venture off the grid for activities such as hunting, hiking, or mountain biking. In austere settings, a family medic may have to deal with injuries that can sometimes be lethal without immediate intervention. Penetrating chest wounds often fall into this category.

WARNING: Although the steps to performing needle decompression and chest tubes are explained in this article, be aware that these procedures are not always successful, even in the hands of trained medical personnel. If performed incorrectly, they can cause severe injury or death, and certain states do not waive liability for complications under “Good Samaritan” laws. Always stay within your level of training and seek professional medical help as soon as possible.

Sunday With Blackthorn -- Today Ed Calderon Discusses Being the 'Gray Man' While Traveling

Now to be honest, a lot of the material in this article seems  geared towards a person or persons engaged in some kind of undercover work of some sort. Especially if operating in a foreign country. Still, there are several recommendations that can be used for the average person when (far) away from home.

So, to paraphrase the old saying, "take what's useful, and leave the rest behind".

“If necessary you should choose to disguise yourself as a shukke [monk], yamabushi [hermit], merchant or anything else that you feel is appropriate to the situation. Pilgrims have a good reason to move around shrines and temples. For this purpose, which is different from other cases, it may be better for you to move as a company of two or three people. In such cases, the technique of dakkō, to understand all the local customs and dialects, is used.” — Quote taken from the Shoninki, as written in 1681 by Master Ninja Natori Masazumi

I recently found myself standing on a corner in downtown Tijuana, waiting for the light to change so I could cross the street, when I saw a man walking a donkey painted as a zebra. He was on his way to work at one of the famous picture stands on Revolution Avenue. Anywhere else on the planet, a man walking down the street with a donkey covered in zebra stripes would certainly draw attention. But the famed “zonkeys” of Tijuana have been a familiar sight in the tourist districts of this city since the 1930s, when gambling was outlawed in Mexico and the industrious local track owners had to find a new way to procure American dollars from tourists.

No one batted an eye at this spectacle, no one took a cell phone picture, no one looked and pointed. No one except an American standing next to me, that is. This zonkey was in its natural environment. It was part of the baseline normal and no matter how outlandish, the majority of the people around me didn’t even acknowledge it.

Workout Wednesday -- What Do You Do If Your Pepper Spray Fails?

I'm a big proponent of OC Spray (Pepper Spray). However, I understand the fact that sometimes it's not going to work. Which is why you always need to have a plan B. Michel Mulder of UC Netherlands shows an option should it your OC Spay fails to stop or deter a criminal assailant.
