Sunday With Blackthorn - Today We Discuss A Comparison of the .357 Mag With The .44 Mag In A Lever Action

I own several Lever Actions, and love all of them.

However I have to admit my last Lever purchase has become my favorite. That's my Henry All Steel Carbine with the side loading gate in .357 Mag. I had wanted one for quite a while, but it wasn't until 2021 that they added the side loading gate. Prior to that it loaded through an opening in the front of the magazine tube. Not very efficient, and if you need to reload it required unlatching and sliding the inner Brass tube most of the way out of the exterior outer tube.

The caliber decision was easy to make. While it was offered in 6 different revolver calibers. Having shot the Rossi Lever Action in various .38 loading's, I decided on the .357.  In the Carbine configuration the gun has a 16 Inch barrel and the overall length of just over 34".

I've fired Levers in both the .357 and the .44 Mag loads and I have to say that they are impressive. Especially in terms of muzzle blast and decibels. A little bit too much so for in-home defensive usage. Or at least I think so. YMMV

In any event, enough of my Lever gun musing's, and let's get down to another Lucky Gunner Ammo comparison.

A Quick Note Here:

Yeah, I know I'm more than a bit late today, but the Pollen count in my area has been ridiculous, and between the coughing, nasal congestion and sinus headache, I'm freaking dying here.

WW1, The First Modern War???

Okay, so Tanks, Airplanes, Poison Gas, Machine guns. Certainly modern enough compared to the 19th century, But then again...

Trench Raids however were a different story entirely.....

Those remained straight out of the Middle ages.

Sunday With Blackthorn - Today We Discuss A Take Down Lever Action in .44 Magnum - Chris Rock On How Things Could have been Worse At The Oscars - And How NYC Makes Buying OC Spray Difficult

First up - Move Lever Action Goodness. A bit too pricey for my blood, but truly a nice example of technology being used to keep and an iconic American Firearm useful. As usual, this one is from Lucky Gunner Ammo.

And Now, A Word From Chris Rock On His Oscars Incident

****************

OC Spray In NYC

The woman in the Post article linked to below was lucky that her assailant was deterred just by her getting the OC Spray out, in her hand, and was obviously prepared to use it. My best guess would be that the assailant had been sprayed before at some point on his criminal career and wasn't in the mood to re-live the experience. I know a lot of people (including several on the mailing list of this Blog) dismiss OC Spray as ineffective. However not everybody lives where  concealed carry is legal, and/or don't have the inclination to carry edged or impact weapons on them.

People live where they live, local laws are not always passed in the best interests of the citizenry, so they make the choices they can, and then live with whatever consequences may arise. In NYC in particular, while OC Spray is legal, the City restricts the places where it is sold. To my knowledge there are no more than a half a dozen locations within the 5 Boroughs that are licensed to sell it.

But what else can you expect from the Peoples Not So Demokratik Republik of New Yorkistan?

NOTE: Yeah, I know, The Post keeps referring to OC as 'Mace'.  This is what happens when you lay off your proofreaders and replace them with  AI Software Programs.......

Sunday With Blackthorn - Today We Discuss "Why Everyone Likes Lever Actions" With The Lucky Gunner Ammo Youtube Channel

Continuing on with this new set of Blog Articles about Lever guns, today Chris baker from Lucky Gunner will tell you about all the things that make Lever Actions so continually popular in the age AR's, AK's and other sundry Semi-Auto long guns.

As you all know ( I think)  I'm a big fan and own several in assorted calibers. And for home defense (with an appropriate pistol caliber chambering of course) especially if you live in an NPE, they are a solid choice that will do the job without getting you in trouble with your local liberal/progressive/socialist District Attorneys office.

Although in this day and age I would still recommend finding a criminal defense attorney and provide them with a yearly retainer.

Meanwhile, on with the video!

NYC Getting Nervous Over Potential SCOTUS Ruling Allowing Concealed Carry As A Shall Issue RIght

Based on the article, I'm thinking they could probably get away with banning it on Mass Transit, on school property, Courthouses, etc.

Oh yeah, to paraphrase the old Chinese saying, "Interesting Times Indeed".

Sunday With Blackthorn - Today We Discuss Lever Actions For Personal Defense.

Most of you guys know I'm a big fan of Lever guns. I was a fan years before The Peoples Not So DemoKratik Republik of New Yorkistan banned most Semi-Auto rifles and carbines. My interest in them for self defense goes back to an article I  read in a magazine. The article was written by Gabe Suarez.

Yes, THAT Gabe Suarez.

I'm pretty sure the majority of you know my overall opinion of Ol' Gabe.

Still, even he puts out something worth reading every once in awhile.

The article linked to below is the 3rd and latest version of the article. Originally published in 1999, he has updated it twice in order to keep it more, relevant I guess? In any event, it's still worth the read. at the bottom of the page there is a link to what he calls the "original" version, but is actually the 2nd version. So if you're inclined, click on that link and see the changes.

Note: I like the Shotgun in the header picture as well!

It's A Tough Gig Being The Flagship Of The Russian Black Sea Fleet

Not fully confirmed yet, but it appears that the Russian Frigate Admiral Makarov, the new flagship of the Black Sea Fleet has been struck by a Neptune Missile fired by the Ukrainians. This is less than a month after two Neptune Missiles struck and sank the  Frigate Moskva, the former Flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

The Russians are denying it, but then again they denied that the Moskva was sunk by the Ukrainians.

As I said above, this has not been confirmed yet, so let's wait and see.

Sunday With Blackthorn - Today We Discuss How A Semi-Auto Shotgun Works

So last week you got animated 3D technical demonstration of how a Pump Action Shotgun works. Today the Blackthorn Blog brings you an equally well ;presented 3d animated demonstration of how a Semi-Auto works. I think you'll find it just as interesting as last weeks presentation.

A quick note here: Finding engaging articles about Shotguns has become a bit difficult lately. Accordingly, starting next Sunday, I will be transitioning to articles about my second favorite firearm, the Lever Action Carbine. I'm sure I can make it as interesting and entertaining as the previous Shotgun series of articles you've all been reading the past few months.

But for now, let's get back to the Shotguns!
