12Gauge vs 20 Gauge - And What Ammo To Feed Your 20 Ga for Home Defense

I first read about using a 20 ga in a book by Ayoob many years ago. It may have even been his book "Stressfire".

My first shotgun was a Mossberg 12 ga pump, and I was Trap shooting and using #7 or #8 clay loads. No problem there, but I never liked shooting 00 Buck or 1 oz Slugs. Sold the shotgun in the late 90's to a guy at work. Bought the Stoeger  Outback Over/Under in 20 ga back in 2011 and I loved it. Bunch of the old guys at my club gave me all the bullshit about "it's going recoil worse", "the recoil is no different from a 12 ga", "just hold it this way"," man up", yada yada yada, on and on

To Hell with them! Slugs and #3 Buck are no problem as the recoil is massively reduced compared to similar rounds in 12 ga. Fast forward to 2015, and I  picked up the Mossberg 500 Youth model (pictured Above) with the shorter stock/length of pull, bought a shorter barrel to replace the 22" bird barrel and I haven't had a complaint since.

I should note here that while Rifled Slugs are devastating, for in Home Defense I feel that N0. 3 Buck is the more practical load, in particular where the issue of wall over-penetration is concerned.

A Brief Article On what To Use In your Home Defense Shotgun (And It's Not Birdshot)

 Written by Massad Ayoob and originally published in Backwoods Home Magazine.  This article cuts right to point about the most practical loads to use in your SG whether it's a 12 or a 20, Pump or Semi-Auto.  The central point he makes however is that Birdshot is for birds and not for home invaders or burglars.

There’s a lot of crappy gun advice out there.  One example I hear all the time is, “Load your home defense shotgun with birdshot. It’ll mess up the home invader, but it won’t go through the walls and endanger your children.” 

Let me get this straight. You can put your fist through sheetrock, but try as I have on occasion, I’ve never been able to put my fist through a human opponent. And if what you’re shooting will go deep enough into a large, aggressive human male to stop him, what makes anyone think it won’t go through sheetrock, and in any case what are they doing firing in a direction where their children’s bedrooms are the backstop?

I said as much back in the 1980s when I wrote “StressFire II: Advanced Combat Shotgun,” and I stand by that advice today.

Greg Ellifritz, one of the brightest stars in modern self-defense training today, agrees. Here’s what he had to say on the matter last week in his very useful blog:

My recommendation is #1 buckshot in the standard “express” load for the 12 gauge semiautomatic defense shotgun: 16 .30 caliber projectiles that seem to give optimum penetration in homicidal humans and in most shotguns I’ve tried it in, optimum pattern density.  I seldom see an autoloading shotgun that is absolutely reliable with the lighter “low recoil” or “tactical” loads, but those work fine in pump guns and of course give softer recoil. The Federal #1 Buck low recoil load is hard to find, but worth looking for.  In a 20 gauge, the most readily available buckshot load is #3, which consists of 20 .25 caliber pellets, and at home defense distances, that’ll do. 

Make sure the home defense plan is for the family to hunker down if there’s a home invasion, and you have pre-planned an interdiction point at which to confront the intruder(s) where you have cover, they don’t, and your loved ones aren’t anywhere in your “shooting background.”

 Shotguns for home Defense, one of my favorite subjects. While the article focuses exclusively on the 12 gauge, my personal choice is for the 20 gauge. At typical ranges inside your own house (unless you happen to own a Mega-Mansion) the bad guy will never know the difference.

Note: The article references the book 'Holloway's Raiders' written by Retired Captain E.R. Walt of the Dallas P.D. I highly recommend this book for real world examples of the effectiveness of the Shotgun as a short to medium range defensive firearm.

Airline Attendants Get Combatives Training To Deal With Increase in Violent Passengers

 

 Now they're not calling it Combatives, but the last time I looked, Double Cupped hand Strikes to the ears, Eye Jabs, Palm heels/Tiger Claws to the face, Hammerfists, and Knees To the groin pretty much constitutes Combatives.

 In the article linked below, there are numerous pictures of the Flight Attendants delivering these strikes to Spar-Pros and BoB Dummies. 

It's nice to see that somebody at the Airlines understands that the tight conditions within the aircraft as well as the fact that most of the Flight Attendants are not going to have either the time or inclination to commit to long term training in an MMA style facility.  At this point the training is not mandatory, but there is a push on from the Attendants Union to have it become mandatory. 

Some of the people trained will probably be able to make it work, while others may not. Only time will tell if it pays off.
