California Gun Store Owners Use 1st Amendment to protect the 2nd
Several gun store owners in California have filed for relief from a state law that bans them from advertising what they sell on the fronts of their stores
ie: No pictures of firearms are allowed.
Fortunately they found a Law Firm that knows their business. The decisions have not come down yet, but it appears as if the Federal Judges are ready to rule that the State law is a violation of the stores 1st Amendment rights.
Sometimes you just need to bring a lawyer to your gunfight.

This one Goes Out To My Niece In The Air Force
Any plane where you can shoot off one of the engines, half a wing, most of the tail and know that you're safe from ground-fire because the pilot sits in what is essentially a titanium bathtub that weighs over half a ton, is OK by me!
Because when you need a tank utterly destroyed by the ugliest jet aircraft ever fielded by the USAF, you gotta' have the A-10 Warthog.
Accept no substitutes!

Politics, Strange bedfellows, and Archaic Knife Laws in NYC
Under the leadership of Cy Vance Jr. as District attorney, police have for the past 5 years or more been interpreting a 60+ year old law designed to take switchblades off the street to lock people up for carrying something as mundane as a Swiss Army knife. Owing to the fact that the bulk of the arrests, and the resulting criminal records, have fallen excessively on minorities in the city, there has been a call for a change.
A bill has since wound it's way through the NY state Assembly and Senate was passed in June of this year. The bill was to modify and clarify the true definition of what a 'Gravity Knife' is or isn't. The bill has yet to reach the the Governors desk for signing.
There is pressure, mostly from the Mayor, District Attorney and Police Commissioner of NYC not to sign it. Gov. Cuomo has not taken a stand either way. In actuality it may not matter. The Bill passed both house with overwhelming majorities. The vote was 99 to 12 in the Assembly, and unanimous in the Senate, setting up even a veto for an easy override that would allow the Bill to become Law.
To me, the best and most interesting part of this is the odd collection of disparate parties that came together from various political special interest groups. And If I can benefit from an 'Identity Politics' based piece of legislation, I'm certainly not going to complain.
Interesting times indeed.

How Do You Stick It To Liberal News Media Outlets?
You use the internet and their own APPS of course.
Glad to see the conservatives in this country are finally learning to use modern social media to make life miserable for the leftist Liberal media news outlets.
Use their own tactics against them. They hate that! :-)

And On The Keeping Manufacturing Jobs Here In The US
Do you think this would have happened if Hillary was elected?
And just as a reminder, FORD was the only US automaker not to take a straight bailout from the Obama Administration, only a loan which they repaid, and wound up doing better than either GM or Chrysler.

Obama Continues To Be The Best Firearms Salesman In American History
Fearing that he will enact firearms restrictions through Executive Action in the waning days of his administration, Americans are boosting sales records for the Firearms industry.
Statistics show that sales are up 27% for the last 17 months in a row, with most of the demand being for Ar type rifles and 9mm handguns. Ammunition sales also reflect the trend for defensive weapons over hunting guns.

See How Fast A Politician Changes Their Tune Once Their Party Starts Losing Elections
Frau Chancellor Merkel of Germany is singing a different song since her political party lost seats in a round of voting in several parts of Germany the other day. She's obviously more concerned with the loss of party seats in the government, no doubt catching shit from her own party members, than she is with the welfare of the people who voted her and her CDU party into power in the first place.
Her "We can do it" catch line is now out of use since the 'common' people have figured out that we only applies to them, and not to the people in charge who live in high end neighborhoods and have armed guards at their disposal 24/7/365.

Just How Much "Good Work" Does The Clinton Foundation Do?
All I ever hear from the mainstream media and Democratic party pundits and supporters is "But the Clinton Foundation does so much good work".....
Really?
According to their 2014 IRS Tax filing, it's not as much as they would like people to believe. As far as I'm concerned, any charitable organization that isn't spending at least 50% of their donations on actual charitable work should not be be classed as charitable organizations and should lose any tax exempt status they have.
As for the Clinton Foundation, let's look at the numbers shall we?

All Is Not Well In Brussells
After voting to leave the EU, Britain appears to have sparked a mini rebellion among other EU member states. Several of the Eastern European states are also unhappy with the Brussels mandated immigration policies and have decided to have their own discussion about just how much sovereignty they really are willing to cede.

The Mind Is The Weapon, Everything Else Is Just A Tool.
So at the Boston Marathon it was a bomb. In Paris, San Bernadino, Orlando, Baton Rouge (and several others) it was firearms. At Nice it was a truck, and now in Germany we're seeing edged weapons.

Practical Reasons For Using A Knife For Personal Protection
This article was written by Chris Fry (of MDTS Training) and was published online by the PersonalDefenseNetwork (PDN).
I have attended several training classes by Chris and do recommend him for his training services. This is not a n in-depth article of techniques, but rather an overview detailing the positive aspects of carrying an edged/pointed tool for personal protection.
Why the Knife for Self Defense?

By Chris Fry
I was recently asked why I’m so quick to recommend a knife, not a gun, as a primary personal-protection tool. For the purposes of this article, what I mean by a “knife” is one of the very commonplace folding knives found in almost any sporting goods store, or a small fixed-blade knife. Both of these may measure 6 to 7 inches total, with 2 to 3 inches of cutting surface. Here are some general reasons why I recommend a knife:
Knife vs. Gun for Self Defense
Knives are easy to find and purchase
Knives can be carried almost everywhere.
Small knives are convenient to carry and conceal.
More than one knife can be carried easily.
A knife or object/improvised tool is possibly the most common tool found in our everyday environments — at work and at home.
Local laws do not require a permit to own and carry a small knife.
Knife applications can be easily adapted to improvised tools or nearly any firm pointed object.
A small knife can be “palmed” or “indexed” covertly much more easily than a handgun, and a knife-like object or improvised pointed tool can be carried openly without drawing attention — for example, a pen or screwdriver
A knife doesn’t require an in-depth understanding of ballistic overpenetration and clearing your background prior to application.
Knives are easy to access and apply in confined spaces due to their small size.
Knives are easy to apply, requiring gross motor skills with minimal training time.
Knives are easy to integrate with other physical defense skills.
Knife application is not reliant upon size, strength or prolonged attribute training development. A child can put the tines of a fork against an adult’s leg and, with a little pressure, penetrate and retract, creating a wound. The child simply doesn’t understand the specifics of where, how and why.
A knife can be a tremendous equalizer if utilized properly, more so than relying upon attribute-based physical defense skills such as punching or kicking. The latter need time to develop and size/mass to apply against an opponent of greater size/mass than oneself, or more than one opponent.
A knife is better when facing an opponent with a knife, stick or even a gun (at close range) compared to relying upon just physical defense skills.
A knife is an everyday tool that can be and is used for multiple utilitarian tasks, thus an almost instinctive familiarity with knives is ingrained in us from childhood. This same familiarity does not exist with a handgun. Give your wife or daughter a handgun and a steak knife off the dinner table and note which one they immediately recoil from.
Under austere conditions or in unknown environments, a knife or knife-like tool can be more readily acquired or made.
Knife Application: Point, Edge or Both?
A justified concern many have is their ability to apply the knife in a given situation. The knife is a close-contact tool that requires face-to-face application, similar to a hand-to-hand altercation. While many people have a hard time justifying the usage or application of such a tool to protect themselves, I urge you to consider that if your child, mother, father, brother or sister’s life is at stake, you must act.
This isn’t a knife “training” article per se, but in very general terms, knife application can be broken into three categories: point driven, edge driven, and a combination of both. Think about which method of application applies to the widest variety of knives, tools and objects, and analyze where and at what ranges each application can be utilized successfully. If robbery, rape, kidnapping or assault occurs at extreme close range, the ability to slash with the knife edge may be hindered. Consider the efficacy of edge-driven application (slashing) inside a car or when grounded in some type of grappling engagement.
Point-driven application applies to a broad spectrum of items, tools and objects found in our everyday environments and includes pens, pencils, forks, screwdrivers, and scissors. Point-driven application is predicated upon putting the point or tip of the knife or object between yourself and the attacker and thrusting, jabbing, or pushing at and into targets that provide maximum potential for preventing or stopping aggression against you.
The face (generic target), eyes (specific target), and throat area inflict decent physical damage while sending a clear psychological message. At extreme close range (contact distance), the “fork” (directly between the legs) is an easy to hit (large and somewhat fixed), vascular rich and psychologically intimidating target area. The torso is protected by bone (sternal plate and ribs) and muscle (abdominal musculature), and vital organs lie deep enough that thrusting and slashing require repeated penetration to inflict sufficient damage to stop an attacker, especially a young, strong and determined one.
Ultimately, the application method you choose is situation driven. If you have an actual knife, you may be able to slash and thrust. But if you’re in the front seat of your VW when a stranger gets in, and all you have is the plastic fork that came with your lunch, then knowing and understanding both methods may be essential to your survival.
Summary
Carrying, accessing and possibly utilizing a knife or knife-like tool on another person is serious business. It requires understanding the legal ramifications of doing so: the why, when and how of justifiable use of lethal force. If you carry and protect yourself and others with a knife, it is considered lethal force, just like a gun. A knife is an affordable option that is available nearly everywhere, legal in one form or another (do your research) nearly everywhere, and an extremely viable personal protection tool with minimal (a few weeks) training time. Personally, I would much rather have my family members’ EDC (everyday carry) be a convenient small folding knife as opposed to nothing at all.
If you’re not carrying a knife, ask yourself why not. And if you are, keep in mind that possession does not equal proficiency, and learn the fundamentals of knife and edged-tool personal-protection skills.
I have attended several training classes by Chris and do recommend him for his training services. This is not a n in-depth article of techniques, but rather an overview detailing the positive aspects of carrying an edged/pointed tool for personal protection.

What The People In Charge Really Think About The Middle Class
Consider this my Socio-Economic rant for a soggy, humid day on the East coast. There's nothing really new here, but it's very well written and put together.

Combat Jujutsu Class from Clint Sporman North Brunswick N.J. July 6th 201s6
From Clint,s FaceBook Page. Clint has decided to set up a seminar at a local Fitness and Martial Arts & Self Defnse gym. This will allow him to reach a wider audience for what we do. Utilizing a regular school with a fully matted facility will also allow him to demo/train the methods of standup grappling and groundfighting as we do it. This will help dispel the mistaken belief that we are just "WW2" guys.

Referring back to the post I made on April 23rd http://wwwblackthorn.blogspot.com/2016/04/how-much-does-it-cost-for-nyc-concealed.html , one of the cops has been indicted and arrested for corruption.

Want To Learn A Truly Practical 'Self Defense' Technique?
Spend some time taking a first aid course, a CPR course, a AED/Defibrilator course, and now apparently, after decades of calling it a method of last resort, learn how to use a a tourniquet. The medical field has, after exhaustive studies done as a result of the military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan over the last decade, reversed themselves about the dangers of tourniquet use.
Gunshot, knife and shrapnel wounds aside (although recent terrorist events within the US are certainly set to change that) you are still likely to be involved in an accident of some sort that could potentially involve trauma induced massive bleeding. Knowing how to handle a situation such as that could make the difference between you or someone else bleeding to death.

Think The Orlando Moslem Shooter Was A Deluded Religious Fanatic? Check Out His Father!
Apparently this kid was fated for infamy from the day he was born. Apparently his father believes himself to be the head of the 'Afghani Government In Exile". He apparently believed that punishing gays was not the job of other people, and that it was up to Allah to hand down righteous justice.
So I'm going to guess that his son just wanted to facilitate the time of the meeting.
Oh yeah, you can't make this shit up.
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/orlando-shooting-omar-mateen-father-seddique-mateen-taliban-god-punish-gays/
Sidenote: The NY Daily News already put out their headline today reading "Thanks NRA"
So this guy has a father that is a religious fanatic, he was able to go out and buy some firearms after being investigated by the FBI (twice), was able to pass a background check at a private security firm that does business with Homeland Security and obtained an armed security guard's license that involved a background check.
Oh yeah, and he used to beat his wife too!
http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/jun/13/orlando-massacre-omar-mateens-ex-wife-says-he-beat-her-and-held-her-hostage
And a former co-worker told his employers (G4S Security Services) that the guy was a racist and a homophobe and talked about killing people all the time, but the company did nothing because they didn't want any legal problems about harassing a Moslem.
https://latest.com/2016/06/former-co-worker-says-omar-fateen-talked-of-killing-people-but-company-wouldnt-do-anything/
But it's the NRA's fault of course......
Riiiiight....
The guy was a Moslem so the anti-gun angle will fade in a week or less.

Gun Store Actually Wins Case Before the 9th Federal Circuit Court Of Appeals
The 9th Circuit Court, the most Judicially Liberal and anti-gun Federal court in the country has ruled in favor of a gun store that was going to be shut down by a local ordinance in Alameda County California.
Will wonders never cease. The basis for the decision? The language in the Heller decision in 2008. For all you whiners out there who don't think Heller changed anything, take your heads out of your asses. Gun rights did not disappear in a massive BANG! They got chipped away a piece at a time by small court cases that kept coming in with little notice.
And that's the only way they're going to come back. A piece at a time through small unobtrusive, boring little court cases like this.

On Socialism In The Americas
I was never a fan of Margaret Thatcher, but one thing she said certainly rings true. 'the problem with Socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other peoples money"
Ol' Hugo Chavez left quite the mess behind him apparently. Just about 3 years since his death, the chickens are coming home to roost.
And they're apparently not laying enough eggs to feed the populace.

E Tu ' Google?
How many times has somebody asked you a question and either you didn't know the answer or you were busy and in the middle of something and your response was;
"Can't you see I'm doing something here? Google it and leave me alone"
And so either you or someone else is able to find an answer by checking some of the links that come up. But of late have you noticed the "Answer Box" that comes up with a short form definitive answer that disinclines you from actually checking any of the links?
Well it seems that Google is fucking with you too.
It never seems to end these days.

Digital Continues It's Inexorable March To Victory Over The Print Media
Gun magazine publisher, Harris Publications, abruptly announced to its staff several days ago that it was closing down effective April 29, 2016. This move will eliminate over a dozen shooting and firearms related periodicals and annuals.
Among the magazines shuttered:
Combat Handguns,
Guns & Weapons for Law Enforcement,
Pocket Pistols,
Survivor’s Edge,
Tactical Weapons, and
Special Weapons for Military & Police.
In business for just about 40 years, the advent of internet based media has finally made it too difficult to turn a reasonable profit. Now I have to admit myself that I pretty much stopped buying gun related mags a few years back, but being an old geezer I feel a nostalgic loss of something that was part of my normal life for decades.
The links below are for articles with few some more specifics.

How Much Does It Cost For A NYC Concealed Carry Permit
Apparently $18,000.
$12,000 for the middleman while the other $6,000 worth of bribes gets divided among the three corrupt cops in the Licensing Division who then approve and expedite the License requests. The three cops involved have already been demoted and had their shields and weapons taken away.
The middleman has been arrested and charged with bribing those three officers (and by the way, we are not talking about patrolmen level officers here) and is currently out on bail.
To modify an old saying here, we must also add potential injury to insult as it would seem that one of the recipients of these "expedited' carry permits has had four (4) domestic abuse charges filed against him and had previously been arrested for forgery.
The above bribery scam has, over the last several years, resulted in the issuance of 150 "expedited" carry licenses. That comes out to a whopping $900,000 split between the three cops, and $1.8 MILLION for the middleman.
Oh yeah, just trust the government, they're here to help.........

Well, There Appears To Be At least One Bright Spot In The American Economy
And it even seems to be in spite of the goverments best efforts. Apparently the firearms industry in America added an additional 25,000 jobs to the economy at at an average wage of just over $50,000 per employee.
And people are crowing about a $15.00 minimum wage.

April 2016 Combatives Seminar at The Dungeon
The latest seminar is now in the Close Combat history books. 10 attendees from parts various and sundry were there. Guys came in from out of state and I'd like to thank everybody who came down. Pennsylvania, Vermont, Massachusetts, and several other states were represented. I'd like to thank Art for flying in and a special thanks goes out to Kurt for driving up all the way from Florida!
Thank you Gabe, Jim, Gilbert, Kurt, Art, Ben, Robert, Hal, Mike, Alan, and even my son for showing up and putting in the time.
The first day was a review of some of our core material with the addition of a couple of techniques that we haven't done in quite awhile such as developing power with the vertical EOH, and the double hand Chin Jab.
The second day of the edged weapons defense went well until Clint pulled a hamstring trying to do the 'Lightning-Like' kick that Fairbairn used to talk about.
OUCH!
After that, seeing as how the defensive knifework was pretty much covered anyway, Clint wisely decided to transition to showing some groundwork that didn't require much standing.
There was also an unfortunate miscommunication that resulted in Ralph not making it to the Seminar. In spite of those two problems we managed to get it done and I hope everybody who attended was able to leave with something useful to them.
Again my thanks to everyone who attended.

Another Small Victory, But A Victory Nonetheless
The last handgun ban in the USA has now been struck down by the Federal courts. Most people don't actually think of The Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands as part of the USA, but apparently the US District Court does.
It may not seem like much, but wars are won based on the outcome of smaller battles.

More Fun With Drones In Oklahoma
So apparently a contractor was using drone to examine the roof gutters of a house he had been hired to work on, when a neighbor thought it was spying on her home.
So she shot it down (I'm guessing with a shotgun)
http://okcfox.com/news/local/legal-drone-shot-down-in-edmond-neighborhood
At this time the County Sherrif's dept. is not considering charges. It is of note however that this entertaining incident occurred while a bill is working it's way through the State Legislature that would allow Oklahoma residents to shoot down unauthorized drones over their property without facing any civil liability.

The Government, Apple, and Modern Technology
Well it's official. The FBI has now dropped it's case against Apple about de-crypting the Iphones of the San Bernadino shooters. Last week the FBI moved for a delay in the proceedings after hiring an Israeli Tech company (owned by a Japanese corporation) to try to access the iphone's data.
Apparently the Feds actually hired some competent people for a change because today they announced that they no longer needed any help from Apple as the subject phone(s) had been cracked.
George Orwell would be amazed..

Taking Out The Bad Guy Using Surprise, A Combatives Mindset, And An Improvised Weapon
The Issue With Technology Is, There's Always A Workaround
The Court showdown between the FBI and Apple over decrypting the Iphones of the San Bernadino shooters has been postponed. The result of the fact that the whole issue may become moot as the FBI has engaged an Israeli firm, Cellebrite, itself a subsidiary of the Japanese firm Sun Corp, to decrypt the phones.
As I've said before, Apple really doesn't give a shit about anybody's privacy. All they're worried about is the public relations backlash if they're seen as cooperating with the government.
Ah, isn't technolgy wonderful! Hahahahahahahahahaha!

Lee Morrison's Flanking Drill
This is in response to a question at another forum about what the Flanking Drill is. The video below involves a 2 on 1 unarmed scenario. However the basic technique of moving to the off side of your assailant is the same as in a knife attack.

Merrick Garland For The Supreme Court?
Not if you're a firearms owner. His track record on firearms registries, and the original D.C handgun ban is shall we say, less than stellar. For specifics, hit the link below.

The link below will take you to US Secret Service Training Document. Essentially, what they are told/taught to watch for when dealing with the public.
Nothing new or earth shattering but still, a basic primer that will come as no surprise to most of the readers of this blog.

SOF Magazine Moves Into The Digital Age
Effective April 1, 2016 SOF Magazine (the print edition that is) goes the way of the dinosaur. SOF will continue to exist in an online, digital format only. After 41 years of being glorified by some and vilified by others (while being thought of as being responsible for your name being put on a government list if you purchased a subscription) the cost of printing hardcopy has forced SOF to become a part of the digital age.
Well, here's to RKB and the magazine that brought you graphic news photos from hotspots around the world, and probably defined what was "Tacticool" (before the term was invented) from the late 70's right up to the early 90's.

John Robb (Global Guerillas Blog) On Why Trump Is Actually Doing So Well
John Robb has a Blog called GlobalGuerillas. He is a retired USAF Intelligence officer who doesn't look at things only from a superficial viewpoint (like most people who watch CNN, FOX or any other big name news media outlets) but at what's behind everything you see and hear from the media.
This is from about 10 days ago and goes to the success of Trump, and to a degree Sanders as well, in the current political election cycle.

EU Citizens Assaulted, EU Government Tries To Restrict Citizens Right To Self Defense
What could be more natural for a bunch of Bureaucrats that are elected by other Bureaucrats? Refugees assault EU citizens, EU citizens start buying firearms for protection, EU comes up with new firearms restrictions with the charge being lead by the rabidly anti-gun UK government.
The EU Can't or won't protect their own citizens, and is afraid they'll protect themselves.
This isn't even about Christianity vs Islam. They allow in tens of thousands of people with virtually no "reasonable and commonsense background checks" (where have we heard that one before?) and when things go wrong the first reaction is to put restrictions on the people who are victimized.
Typical government reaction. More worried about their own image than the people who elected them.

Going Dark? Not So Fast
Yeah I know, this link is to an article from the NY Times. (Insert roll eyes smilie) The intent of the article is as a rebuttal to Republican calls for more information access backdoors into modern media communications programs. However all it really does is show technology has already, and is continuing to invade and destroy any aspect of privacy you ever had.
Even George Orwell would be shaking his head.

The Latest On Syria
With all the election BS dominating the media these days, the Civil war & ISIS advances in Syria have fallen by the wayside. However since Russia jumped in to prop up the Al Assad regime, things have changed in that theater of conflict in the wacky world of the Middle East.
There is no doubt that Russia's first interest is keeping Assad in power so as to maintain their Naval base at Tartarus and to keep Saudi Arabia and Qatar from building natural gas lines to Turkey which would threaten Russia's stranglehold on natural gas supply to Europe. ISIS (or Da'esh, pick the name you like) has only been able to make the gains they have in Syria (1/3 of the country) by exploiting the civil war that cropped up about 5 years ago. Russia is hammering the non-ISIS groups so that Assad can get his act together and then concentrate on ISIS.
A good strategy no matter what you think of Assad or Putin.
For the moment it seems that Russia and Iran have come together in order to stabilize the region to their mutual benefit. For a medium range time-frame this works well for Russia and for the long range it works well for Iran. It works out very poorly for both the USA and Saudi Arabia. With China's economy currently taking a tumble at the moment, Russia can concentrate on propping up his economic future by hurting the Saudi's, whose current price war in what has apparently been a very successful campaign against Shale Oil, are his biggest economic enemy.
As for the USA, like it or not we've become bit players in the region.
The link below is to an article as to the current state of military operations in Syria by Russia.

The Things It TakesTo Change Opinions On Firearms Ownership
Just as his attempts at Gun Control have made President Obama the best salesman the firearms industry ever had, terror and crime are causing other formerly anti-gun advocates in the Law Enforcement area to change their song on firearms ownership. It's unfortunate that it takes the threat of terror within the continental United States to do it, but human nature is what it is.

Chris Christie On The 2nd Ammendment
So I caught bits and pieces of the Republican debate last night. My favorite bullshit part was watching Chris Christie giving his stand on the 2nd Amendment. I knew he was full of shit, but I wanted specifics so I did a quick google search and found everything I needed in one article. As far as his claim that' he's "changed his position", the only thing that's changed is that now he wants to get elected the President of the United States and not the Governor of New Jersey.

Drones, Airspace And The Benelli M1 Super 90
Two weeks into the new year and a nice shiny new drone story. Criminal charges against the homeowner who shot the drone down have already been dismissed. Now the owner of the drone is suing for the damage to his quadcopter.
This could end up being a precedent setting case.

Rise Of The Independents
The latest Gallup poll results show that 40% of American voters no longer belong to or identify with either the democratic or Republican parties. I've been telling this to people for the last 10 years now. Elections are won by motivating the particulars parties base and figuring out what is the most immediate concern of Independent voters.
The old guard on both sides of the political aisle are ever more rapidly losing their relevancy. It's going to make for an inreasingly bumpy ride but change is always inevitable and rarely comfortable.

Bad Day At The Stop and Rob
As a gun owner, both NYC and NY State suck to live in. However with a little luck, some balls, and the right amount of sneakiness, you can still succeed. It also helps if the Bad Guy never took a course on situational awareness.
